What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

PCOS is a condition in which the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgens, male sex hormones. If you have PCOS you may not have periods very often. Or you may have priors that last many days. On ultrasound, many fluid-filled cyst that contain immature eggs develop around the outer edge.

What are symptoms of PCOS? 

Irregular periods (missed or very light), excessive hair growth (Hirsutism), male pattern baldness, cyst on ovaries, fatigue, difficulty losing weight, fertility problems, low sex drive, acne, insulin resistance, mood changes and high testosterone levels.

What is Perimenopause?

This is the time around menopause when your ovaries gradually stop working. Perimenopause can last for years. When you go a full 12 months without a period, menopause has begun. During this time your menstrual cycles may become erratic or irregular. On average perimenopause lasts around 4-8 years.

What are symptoms of Perimenopause?

  • Irregular periods or skipping periods
  • Periods that are heavier or lighter than usual
  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary urgency
  • Sleep problems
  • Changes in mood like irritability, depression or mood swings.

What causes low sexual drive?

Low sexual drive commonly occurs with changes in relationships, major life changes such as pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, menopause, hormone imbalance, fatigue or illness. Often, medications used for mental health disorders and contraception can also cause low sex drive.

How is low libido treated?

Treatment for low libido depends on the underlying cause. Sometimes a pelvic exam is needed to check for problems that may be causing low libido. Depending on the exam results, we may recommend: hormone therapy, medication adjustment, sex therapy/counselor, reducing alcohol intake and eliminating any use of illicit drugs.

Why is it hard to lose weight?

Several factors like genetics, age, race and ethnicity, diet, physical activity, hormones and social factors.

Who should not use GLP-1 Agonist?

This medication should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Not indicated in pediatric, lactating or pregnant patients.

 

What are the precautions and warnings with GLP-1 use?

Please notify your Provider of any risk or new diagnosis of Thyroid C-Cell tumors, Acute Pancreatitis, Acute Gallbladder disease, Hypoglycemia, Acute Kidney Injury, Hypersensitivity Reactions, Diabetic Retinopathy complications in patients with Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Rate Increase, Suicidal behavior and Ideation.

 

What are the most common Reactions?

Most common adverse reactions (incidence ~5%) are: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, dyspepsia, dizziness, abdominal distention, hypoglycemia in type 2 diabetes, flatulence, gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease and nasopharyngitis.

How is GLP-1 administered?

Semaglutide is administered either in an office or home setting using a very tiny needle to administer the medication subcutaneously once a week.

 

What to do if a Semaglutide dose is missed?

Administer Semaglutide as soon as possible within 5 days of missed dose. If more than 5 days then skip dose and resume with the next scheduled injection day.

 

Can I use one needle for multiple doses?

Always use a new needle for each injection to decrease risk of infection. Never share needles with anyone else.

How to dispose of needles?

If you do not have a FDA-cleared sharps disposal container, you may use a household container that is:

  • -Made of a heavy-duty plastic
  • -Can be closed with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid without sharps being able to 
  • come out
  • -Upright and stable during use
  • -Leak-resistant
  • -Properly labeled to warn of hazardous waste inside the container.
